The year 2025 marks the centennial of the birth of Yukio Mishima, a close acquaintance of Tadanori Yokoo. To commemorate this occasion, Maki Namekawa will present the Japanese premiere of the complete solo piano version of Philip Glass’s music for Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters—a film in which Yokoo himself appeared, though it was never released in Japan. Additionally, the program will feature another Japanese premiere: a solo piano piece from Naqoyqatsi, another Glass composition, for which Yokoo designed the Japanese poster.

Maki Namekawa Profile:
Recognized as a leading interpreter of Philip Glass’s piano works, Maki Namekawa has given numerous world premieres of his compositions. These include The Complete 20 Piano Etudes, Mishima, Four Movements for Two Pianos (performed as a piano duo with conductor-pianist Dennis Russell Davies), Two Movements for Four Pianos (in collaboration with the Labèque sisters), and Piano Sonata, which Glass composed for her in 2019. Her 2013 album Philip Glass: The Complete 20 Piano Etudes topped the iTunes Classical chart and received the highest rating from BBC Music Magazine.
In 2017, she performed with Joe Hisaishi, and in 2022, she gave the world premiere of his solo piano piece Toccata, composed for her, during “Joe Hisaishi Week” in Paris.
She regularly performs at major concert halls and international music festivals, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Philharmonie de Paris. Known for her imaginative programming, she seamlessly blends traditional repertoire with contemporary works, captivating audiences worldwide.
