An Editor’s Utopia

Overview

Throughout his life, the editor and William Morris scholar Jiro Ono (1929-1982) pursued the theme of Utopia. In 1960, after working as an editor at Kobundo, Ono and one of his associates established a new publishing company called Shobunsha, which was distinguished by the book designs of Koga Hirano. At the same time, Ono was an educator who taught English literature at Meiji University. In his later years, he lectured on Morris’ philosophy at the Takayama Architecture Seminar School in Hida Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, exerting a strong influence on the budding architects who attended the school including Osamu Ishiyama. This exhibition explores Jiro Ono’s Utopia in three sections devoted to William Morris, Shobunsha, and the Takayama Architecture Seminar School.
